Bollinger Canyon Elementary is committed to providing an inclusive and accessible play environment for all students. When mobility challenges prevented some children from fully enjoying the playground, the school sought a long-term solution to ensure equal access for everyone.

Challenge

The playground’s inclusive swings were surrounded by loose-fill safety surfacing, which met safety standards but created difficulties for students using wheelchairs or other mobility aids. The uneven and shifting surface made it hard for some children to reach the swings independently, limiting their ability to participate in play alongside their peers.

Solution

To create a more accessible and inclusive space, Play Matta Scuff Pads and Play Matta Original in bright blue were installed, forming a smooth, wheelchair-friendly pathway to the inclusive swings. This solution provided a stable surface that made mobility easier, improved fall protection, and required minimal maintenance. Play Matta’s design allows accessible pathways to and from play equipment, ensuring children of all abilities can enjoy the play space and engage with their peers.

Outcome

The upgraded surface transformed the playground into a truly inclusive space. Students using wheelchairs and other mobility aids can now independently access the swings, fostering greater social interaction and participation. By removing physical barriers, every student at Bollinger Canyon Elementary can play, explore and connect.
